Unable to move My Documents folder target in Windows XP?

Symptom

When you right-click the My Documents folder icon in the Desktop or Start Menu, the Target tab may be missing these three buttons:

Restore Default   |    Move    |    Find Target

Cause

This happens if the DisablePersonalDirChange policy setting exists. For stand-alone systems, to get back the missing buttons, open Regedit and navigate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ Explorer

In the right-pane, delete the DisablePersonalDirChange value.

The Microsoft Windows 2000 Resource Kit states that:

Setting DisablePersonalDirChange to 0  - The policy is disabled. Users can move the My Documents folder.

This is not correct, or that does not work in Windows XP. To remove the restriction via Group Policy Editor, set it to Not Configured or Disabled. Or remove the DisablePersonalDirChange REG value altogether.
